How SageGrid trades

SageGrid is a gold grid bot: a small grid on gold, in the direction of the daily trend, with every exit set before the first trade. The rules below are Balanced’s; the other two bots change only the settings shown at the end.

A grid from start to finish

How a SageGrid buy grid works Price falls after the first buy. SageGrid adds a bigger second buy lower down and a bigger third buy further down. The basket target sits just above the average entry, with the basket stop below. Price recovers to the target and all three positions close together in profit. Basket target Average entry Basket stop Buy 1 Buy 2, bigger Buy 3, biggest All three close in profit
An example buy grid. Position sizes grow with the account, and distances with how much gold is moving.

When it opens a trade

  • Only in the direction of gold’s daily trend: it buys in an uptrend and sells in a downtrend.
  • When the trend is unclear, it waits.
  • It doesn’t start trades in the quiet hours after midnight or late on a Friday.
  • It skips days that have already moved a lot, and moments when the spread is wide.
  • Position sizes grow with the account.

When it adds

If price moves against the first position, SageGrid can add up to two larger positions, spaced further apart each time.

That lets the whole grid close in profit on a smaller recovery, and the spacing keeps the grid small. In the whole test year no grid needed more than 3 positions.

How it closes

  • With one position: at its own target, or on a trailing exit once it is in profit (Balanced and Aggressive only).
  • With two or three: all of them close together once price is back just past their average entry.
  • Any grid: closes at once if its open loss reaches 10% of the balance (15% on Aggressive).

How Balanced’s 556 grids of the test year closed

  • At the target
  • Trailing exit
  • Basket stop

300 closed at the target, 237 on the trailing exit and 19 at the basket stop. 537 of 556 closed in profit.

Limits on the whole account

These sit above every grid and work without anyone watching.

8–12%
Daily loss limit. After the day’s closed trades lose 8% of the morning balance (12% on Aggressive), nothing new starts until tomorrow.
8–12%
Daily profit lock. After a 8% gain in a day (12% on Aggressive), it stops for the day and keeps it.
½
Smaller lots in a dip. While the account is 10% or more below its high (15% on Aggressive), new grids start at half size.
35–50%
Kill switch. If the account falls this far below its highest point, the bot closes every trade and stops for good: 35% on Disciplined, 45% on Balanced and 50% on Aggressive.

Three versions

Same rules, different settings.

Disciplined
Waits for a clearer trend before it trades, and has no trailing exit: it closes at the target or the stop. Kill switch at 35%.
Balanced
The rules on this page. Kill switch at 45%.
Aggressive
Balanced at 1.5 times the size, with a 15% stop on each grid, 12% daily limits and half size after a 15% fall. Kill switch at 50%.

What it runs on

  • MetaTrader 5 with gold (XAUUSD), on a 1-minute chart.
  • A computer that stays on day and night, usually a VPS, so the stops are always watched.
  • Lot sizes are set for cent accounts, as on the live account we trade.
